Beginning Our Journey

Our formal formation and bonding sessions ended with a Sending Off from the parish during Mass on 6 August 2011. I thought it was such an appropriate day, even though it was a normal Sunday Mass, coz liturgically, 6 August is the Feast of Transfiguration, a day that is very special to me.

On 12 August, 14 of us gathered at Singapore Changi Airport with some family members and friends to see us off. 3 guys had already went ahead days before. The rest will follow after. It was going to be a long journey for 12 of us coz we will have to wait at Doha for 7 hours before taking the 2nd sector of the flight directly to Madrid. We dreaded by the thought of it. Anyway, some took the opportunity to rest at the lounge as they have special membership, while the rest of us just tried to catch some sleep at the waiting area.

God never ceased to surprise us. As we were boarding the next flight, 7 of us were told that they had to change our seats. As I found my seat, I was at awed with this gift from God: we were upgraded to business class. Nevermind about service or food, we get to sleep horizontally. This itself meant a lot to us.

This was one of the many blessings we received as we begin physically our journey towards Madrid. Of course, more to come.

Pre-WYD Reflection

Being the Spiritual Director of the group can be quite challenging, especially given that I have never World Youth Day before and on top of that, we are talking about a group of young people coming from different walks of life and most do not know each other. How can we help them to bond better? How can we help each other to grow spiritually, to deepen our love for Jesus? Sometimes can be worst when we were being compared with other groups or leaders or even parish. Yet, such comparisons inspired us to want to do better and give our best we can for the group.

However, nothing comes by chance. I always believe that God put us together for a reason or reasons. In fact, rather than saying that I am guiding them, I had learned a lot from the young people, especially through our one-to-one session each month. Their sharings taught me about faith, trust and love for God. Their openness in sharing with me their vulnerabilities reflect the strength they received from Him. These meetings gave me opportunities to know them better and at the same time, help me to grow in my relationship with God and our Blessed Mother Mary. For the past 7 months, each day whenever possible, I would stop by Our Lady of Fatima in our parish on the way for Mass, to entrust all these young people to Her, asking Her to guide and lead them closer to Jesus. I believe she has been our guide and protection throughout our preparation and journey during WYD.

It has been an enriching year, filled with blessings and graces. Indeed, I enjoyed journeying with the young people and thank God for giving me this opportunity to be with them.

Heading towards Madrid

It all began in June last year, when Joachim, the then Youth Coordinator of our parish, St. Francis of Assisi, approached me to be spiritual director of the core team for planning the participation of World Youth Day in Madrid. The core team consists of 4 members (Joachim, Andrew, Magdalene and Julia), who participated in the WYD Sydney 2008. They had never organized such group before, yet because of their positive experiences, they decided to give this service to the parish. We met each month to discuss and plan for the promotional actitivites leading up to the actual recruitment.

This first general meeting with interested participants was in December. There were more than 25 in the list and we had actually decided to keep the group to less than 20. The final confirmed number was 18.

Our monthly meeting began in February as follows:

2nd Tuesday -- Group Adoration
3rd Saturday -- Formation Class with invited speakers
Alternate month -- bonding sessions outside Church

Also, all participants had 1-to-1 meeting with me once a month for spiritual direction and personal sharing.

We had 2 little fund-raising and exhibitions in June and July, mainly to bring more awareness to the parishioners, so that they can also be involved in some ways. In fact, the response was overwhelming. Many gave us petitions to be brought to various places: Avila, Madrid, Rome, etc.

In the midst of all these, the core team continued to meeet once a month for planning and discussion. I am really impressed by their dedication especially Andrew, who was not even going to Madrid.

All these preparation led to a day of Recollection, with Fr. Fred Quek who gave us a very practical sharing in preparing for the coming event. The sending off Mass the following day concludes our preparation towards and began a new phase of our journey.

So, finally, on 12 August 2011, about 14 (2 already went ahead and the other 2 will leave later) of us met at Singapore Changi Airport and head towards Madrid.

Here we come Madrid!

Another long break......

Recently I have been locating long lost friends on facebook and surprisingly found a number of schoolmates and ex-colleagues. What is amazing is that we still recognize each other. I managed to meet up with a couple of them and kept in touch. Somehow, this reunion brought back lots of memories, things and events that have been long forgotten. Thank God for the new technologies, and also for our appreciation for each other, without which I don't think we were able to get connected again. We treasure our friendships and despite being disconnected for almost 20 years, we can still talk like old friends.

Somehow, I realized I am rather "huai jiu". Someone once told me: you are getting old, that's why. Am I? Perhaps.

Spirituality in Asian Film 11 to 13 Jan

Last week, I had the privileged to attend Faith and Film 4 Seminar--Spirituality in Asian Film organized by the CFA Media in Manila. This was actually an invitation extended by the generosity of our Pauline Cooperators--Theresa and Winifred. It was indeed an eye-opening experience for me, as most of the time American films are used for our media literacy talks. This time, as the theme said, we focused on the major Asian films.

Both Win and I left for Manila on 10 Jan and we were welcomed by our two cheerful Pauline sisters, Perla and Mennen at the airport. Win stayed with us at the convent throughout the seminar.

Together with us were another 5 FSP sisters from Manila. The first 2 days' seminar were given by the former Signis president, Fr. Peter Malone. He started off with the Theme, Orientation to Spirituality and Asian Film, with the definition of Spirituality and he englightened us how most Asian Cinema can be contemplative. This was followed by Focal Themes for Spirituality where he introduced the 4 Facets of Spirituality: the Divine, Faith, Ethics & Morality and Lived Spirituality. The Asian Perspectives were highlighted: Traditions, Commuities, War, Family, Simplicity, Suffering and Ritual. Many clips were shown to explain his points ranging from Zhang Yi Mou from China, to Korea, India, Mongolia, Bhutan, Japan, Bangladesh, etc. At the end of the day, we also watch a korean film entitled: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring.

Yesterday to celebrate sr. Lynette's birthday, the whole community went to watch Avatar right after the morning Mass. Personally, watching with 3D effect gave me a whole new perspective. I enjoyed it a lot, the special effects and the whole story line. Actually to think about it, the whole idea of human destroying nature, destroying another culture, tribe for their own selfish motives is nothing new. Quite a number of movies have such theme, like Pocahontas. Yet this message is ever growing urgently. We continue to destroy nature, we continue to destroy other culture, especially those marginalized, just because we think we are more developed or advanced than them.

Yes, I know, it has been a long, long break and I must say that once there is a break, again, it is hard to restart. Tend to give many excuses. Personally I am no writer, so it will always take a while to really put something down.

Well, beginning of a New Year. One of my hopes and even dreams is to keep up with this blog, to share with you my thoughts, reflection and most of all, the love of God. Do share your experiences too, in this way, we can help one another to deepen our faith with our Divine Master.

So, let us continue to pray for one another and especially at this start of the year. I wish you all a Blessed and Grace-filled New Year, beginning with the Lord. May He be your Light and constant Guide in your daily life.

Feast of St. Barnabas

During this Pauline Year, apart from having the opportunity of deepening my knowledge of St. Paul and understanding of his life and writings, I found myself unconsciously "fell in love" also with the person of Barnabas.

Barnabas seemed to me a humble, simple person. A convert himself, he gave up everything he own to follow Jesus, immersing himself fully at the service of the gospel. His companionship and friendship is what attracted me most. Initiating Paul to the Christian communities, seek him out at Tarsus to join him in the mission and then supporting him through his ministry, allowing Paul to "shine" before him. I believe Barnabas was able to encourage Paul and at the same time challenged him when needed. No doubt Paul and Barnabas went separate ways later, which seemed to mark the broken relationship. Yet, the movie Paul of Tarsus showed that in the end, they reconciled before Paul left for Rome. A strong bond of friendship.

This is perhaps the essence and great example in our missionary work and also in our friendship--to be there for the other, encouraging each other and at the same time, be able to speak the truth, even though at times it costs a lot.

Up Close and Personal

On 10 January, 3 young women gathered at our convent to spend an afternoon desiring to know more about our congregation. From the experience and feedback of the first Up Close and Personal, this time we plan to give more time for presentation, sharing plus activities and interaction, somehow it still didn't work out quite as what we wanted. With all the waiting, we began after 3 pm instead of 2 pm as planned (though we actually took this into consideration in our planning) and like before we were trying to finish by 5 pm as 2 of the participants need to go for Mass. So, I was trying to rush through everything, which doesn't seem to be helpful. Anyway, we are all glad to be able to share with them our spirituality, mission, our founders, community life and so forth. No matter what, I feel that the Holy Spirit is the one working through the whole session, and whatever it turn out, I believe God has a reason for it.

We are not giving up. Next Up Close and Personal Session will be sometime in June, so those who missed it for the past 2 time, do take not and hope to see you..... Till the next Up Close and Personal.....

New Year

2009 began with a Thanksgiving Celebration with the Canossian sisters here in Singapore where 4 of their sisters renewed their 25th and 50th anniversary of religious profession on 1 Jan. It is always touching to witness religious celebrating their jubilees. Very inspiring, encouraging.... Sometimes I do wonder will I ever get to that stage... 25 years..... 50 years.... Really, it is the faithfulness of God that sustain us. Thanks to the sisters, choosing this day to celebrate their 25 and 50 years of God's Faithful love, a great way to begin a new year not just for them, but for me.... Gratefulness and blessings.

In the evening, we had another celebration... one of our junior professed sisters celebrated her birthday. Wow! New Year Baby! Another thanksgiving for the gift of life and also Pauline vocation.

The day end with a car ride to downtown Orchard to enjoy the lightings. Talking about economic crisis, people comparing that this year's decoration was not that great, but personally I enjoyed and like it. Not matter how, I am proud that Singaporeans still continue to express their creativities. Bravo! (Would like to show pictures, but I was the driver, can't risk the lives of my sisters to capture those beauties, right?)

Vulnerable, Like a Bird

Advent

Advent is finally "creeping" in. It has been a long while since I come onto this page--with all the activities going on, plus a dose of laziness and added procrastination.... oh! all the excuses.... I must admit, once there is a break, it is always more difficult to pick up again, for whatever reason. Anyway, I do hope to keep up to these blogs and be more persevering.

I like Advent, yet, many times it is so "mixed up" with all the activities--we tend to focus so much of all the externals, at least for myself, that I forget or take for granted the internal, the means, the path that leads up to Christmas. For us, we began our annual outreach at the mall in the middle of November, then there is the promotion of the daily 365 Days with the Lord and this year, of course, we printed the Pauline Calendar and we want all these to reach the people as soon as possible and as much as possible!

Yet, there is always a deep desire to settle down into the "desert" of my heart. To listen more attentively to the Word of God and to find the oasis amidst the dryness.

Our Congregation has prepared a weekly slide presentation for Advent, beautifully done. So do check it out.

As I surf through the net, I also came across this awesome resources for Advent and even for daily life. Creighton University has done a great job in this, Bravo! I am sure you have a lot of resources for your spiritual life, but no harm trying this one: Creighton University Online Ministries for Advent.

I do hope this Advent will be different from the past, and I am pretty sure it will be, one way or another. Wishing you a Blessed Advent and happy preparation for the way of the Lord!

Superior General of the Daughters of St. Paulto the Synod of Bishopson The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church

Most Holy Father, Reverend Synod Fathers, dear brothers and sisters,

I am deeply grateful to the Lord for the wonderful opportunity to participate in this Synod on the Word of God. I feel accompanied in spirit by all the Daughters of St. Paul, who have always been committed to “preaching the divine Word” in keeping with the example of the Apostle of the Gentiles. The Founder of the Pauline Family, Blessed James Alberione, urged us to disseminate the Bible, especially the Gospel, in every part of the world, saying: “Let us read the Scriptures, because God is their Author. They will show you the path to follow [in spreading] the Editions.” And: “The Eucharist and the Bible form the apostolate of the press. May the two be unseparated and inseparable in your hearts.”

My statement today is in reference to what is affirmed in n. 52 of the Instrumentum Laboris (IL) regarding the service of the Word of God carried out by consecrated persons. Through the centuries, the consecrated life, both masculine and feminine, contemplative and apostolic, has always nourished itself and its mission at the Table of the Word. It could not be otherwise because the religious life, in fact, is called to be prophetic and prophecy springs from attentive listening to God: “Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear” (Is. 50:4). The Table of the Word holds an important place in our personal and community life. It provides us with food for our spirit, as well as with light and strength to help us persevere in following the paths of the Lord. It is the source of our creativity and apostolic audacity. I am convinced that we consecrated persons become disciples of the Master to the extent that we welcome the Word with attentive, docile and prayerful hearts, allowing ourselves to be evangelized by the “surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ our Lord” (Phil. 3:8).

To live and work as consecrated persons in today’s post-modern civilization calls for a radical conversion of life: one that gives God and his Word primacy in our lives. What challenge do we face? That is what we are asking ourselves these days as we listen attentively to the statements of the Synod Fathers–input that confirms our conviction that if we are to make progress in this area then it is necessary that the consecrated life not only reaffirm its spiritual commitment to “reading and meditating on the Sacred Books, to ruminating on them daily and making a comparison of life with them so as to carry out a personal and community discernment in view of evangelization” (IL 52), but that it also ensure that Sacred Scripture is the center of our initial and ongoing formation itineraries by enriching them with a systematic study of the Word of God. Even more, we must see to it that more of our members receive specialized training in this field so that the “Bread of the Word” will be broken and shared with the wisdom required for this service.

A member of this Assembly defined the laity as a “sleeping giant.” If the consecrated life, especially its feminine branch, courageously follows the path proposed above, then we, the “silent giant,” will rediscover the prophetic power and significance common to us all, no matter what our charism or mission. And the many forms of our presence, whether in monas-teries or along the streets of the world, will become a living “exegesis” of God’s saving Word and thus respond more effectively to his new appeals to today’s world.

As Daughters of St. Paul here in Singapore, we joined in the celebration of the beginning of the Year of St. Paul on 29 June 2008. The afternoon began with an hour talk on St. Paul by the known Msgr. Eugene Vaz, who was able to bring St. Paul to a more personal level for those presence. The talk was followed by a Mass with Fr. Cyril Lee and Fr. Louiseau con-celebrating. The evening ended with fellowship and dinner.

Pauline Year

On the night of 28 June the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul marked the beginning of the Year of St. Paul with a ceremony of opening the Church's main door followed by the unveiling of the statue of St. Paul and Eucharistic Celebration by Archbishop Nicholas Chia. At the end of the Mass, His Grace led the congregation to sign the Pledge Book--called "Singapore Catholics Commemorate St. Paul's Year" (of which one pledged to read at least one letter of St. Paul during this Pauline Year and is invited to submit an essay after that.) This book will be presented to the Vatican at the end of the Pauline Year.

Up Close and Personal Afternoon

This afternoon of Up Close and Personal with young women turned up well. 6 young women came, with 4 of them from the University and 2 from our parish, St. Francis of Assisi. Both Sr. Karen and myself did the presentation of introducing them about our Founder, co-foundress, Spirituality, Mission and Community life. They seemed rather contented. Since we had rather limited time, we really do not have much time to share personally, something which we need to take note of in the future. Most of them had requested for more such sessions, so hopefully we will be able to meet again. Thanks for all your prayers.

Day of Recollection

The Day of Recollection went on well yesterday. I am not sure we ever did something similar before in Singapore, but for most of us as vocation promoters, it was a new experience. If some of you remember or know, we had a kind of workshop on Vocation Sunday, where young women came to find out more about religious vocation from the women religious. Well, our team had decided this year that instead of doing this as a one-off thing yearly, we want to have follow-ups together for the young women, as a mean and channel for them to pray together, and get to know each other who are journeying together, and to know of other congregations.

So, yesterday was the first follow-up and Sr. Lucy of the Good Shepherd graciously volunteer to host it. The ambience was great, especially the prayer room. We had sharing in the morning with the theme: Call to Conversion and in the afternoon: Choosing Life. Both the relgious and the participants were opened to share their thoughts and reflections.

We hope that through these similar sessions, young women will find courage and strength together, and feel that they were not alone in the journey...for we are all Companions on the Journey.

Day of Recollection

31 May, the InterCongregation Women Religious is organising a Day of Recollection for Young Women who are discerning their vocation. This is kind of a follow-up session from our first gathering on Vocation Sunday. Back then we have about 12 young women who came. Since this day of prayer is open to all young women, we hope there will be more people attending. Our desire is that through this regular meetings, young women will have more point of entry to know the religious in Singapore and bring to awareness of their own vocation. Please pray for them.

For those who don't know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever.
The race encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile (3.86 kilometer) ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometer) bike ride, and ending with a 26.2 mile (42.195 kilometer) marathon along the coast of the Big Island. On the Journey Toward Becoming Friends

Friendships are mysterious. They often begin and end when we least them expect them to. We sometimes become friends with people we are not initially drawn to. Sometimes we don't develop the kind of friendship we desire with someone we are attracted to. Some friendships take a lot of work, while others are as natural as breathing.

Friendship is a gift waiting to be revealed with every person I meet. With just a few people, the gift of covenant relationship will be revealed. With very many people, the gift of friendly waves and weather conversations will unfold. In between are the gifts of healthy working friendships, close lifelong friendships, friendships born in crisis, celebration, a shared passion for coffee, golf, children, faith, travel, et cetera.

Friendships are life-giving when we accept, nurture, and celebrate the particular gift that is present in each. Friendships are draining and difficult when we reject the gift by either not accepting the intimacy offered or trying to make the gift more intimate than it was ever meant to be.

These gifts of friendship are scattered like ripe fruit in the gardens of our lives, waiting to be tasted and enjoyed. Each gift is given by a loving God, who knows what we need and who desires a friendship with every one of us. Therefore, while we may choose our friendships, we do not create the gift of friendship. We can work on our friendships, but we cannot change them into something they are not gifted to be. This is the pain and the joy, the poverty and the incredible freedom we experience on the journey to becoming friends.

Laying Down Your Life for Your Friends

Good Shepherds are willing to lay down their lives for their sheep (see John 10:11). As spiritual leaders walking in the footsteps of Jesus, we are called to lay down our lives for our people. This laying down might in special circumstances mean dying for others. But it means first of all making our own lives - our sorrows and joys, our despair and hope, our loneliness and experience of intimacy - available to others as sources of new life.

One of the greatest gifts we can give others is ourselves. We offer consolation and comfort, especially in moments of crisis, when we say: "Do not be afraid, I know what you are living and I am living it with you. You are not alone." Thus we become Christ-like shepherds.

Gift of Baptism

Today is a silent and yet special day for me. 17 years ago, on this date, I received the gift of baptism at the Church of St. Bernadette, and back then was the Easter Vigil. 17 years seem long, yet, I still feel as if I am at the beginning, learning more about the faith, about Jesus, about God, about the Church.... This reminds me of the teaching of our founder, Blessed James Alberione, the attitude of studiosita--to learn from all. We will never finish our learning, and I agree this is the beauty of being human. Till the day we die, we continue to learn from everything.

Today, I am thankful for all the people who in one way or another, help in the growth of my faith--the sponsors, my friends, my god-mother, my sisters in the congregation, particularly my formators and those who journey with me. They have been the one to help me see and experience the love of God till this day. Without them, I would not have reach where I am today. A very big Thank You.

The Pharisee

In today's gospel, Jesus told us the parable about the Pharisee and the Tax collector in Luke 18:9-14. It never struck me as before, that the Pharisee actually prayed to himself. Then I came across this beautiful words from the perspective of the Pharisee:

It was a revelation.
It happened after I had prayed.
I was leaving the temple
and I happened to glance across
at that wretched tax-collector.
It was just the look on his face.
He wasn't wretched after all.
He was trule at peace.
I saw that he was blessed
in a way I had never been.
I knew I had missed something absolutely vital!
So I went back into the temple.
I said nothing.
I simply stood in the presence of our God
until it slowly dawned on me,
the truth about myself:
my pride, my contempt, my self-righteousness.
I knew then that I was a sinner,
and I asked the Lord for mercy.

I stayed a long time in the temple,
and when I walked away,
I knew there was just a chance
that one day my face too
might be like that tax-collector's,
glowing with peacefulness
and quiet happiness.

Parenting

Last weekend, I was at a parish doing having our media outreach and interesting I witnessed 2 scenes of "parenting".

Halfway during a Mass, a father suddenly walked out of the Church angrily, carrying his 3-year old boy. He was crying in fear and covering his father's mouth, saying something like "no, don't do it, no...." As they reached a grass patch behind some parked cars, I could heard some beatings and the father practically "roared" (he shouted so loud that his voice went almost coarsed) at the boy: you purposedly do this to me, why are you doing this? I treated you nicely, but you are not treating me the same... you purposedly do this, .... he went on repeating similar lines. After this came a silent and perhaps they were having a "father and son" talk. After quite some time, both of them went back towards the Church and stayed at the entrance. Just then the mother, pregnant, came out and carried the boy, filled with pity and love.

As I was watching them, out came another father and son. This time, the little boy, about the same age as the other, lowered his head, seemed to be sad, sorry and guilty but without a word. The father whispered to him with a serious look, but from a distance, I could tell that the little boy must have did something wrong and was punished by standing aside. The father was also standing near him.

2 misbehaved boys in the Church, 2 different ways of treatment. One was dwelt with in a rage, the other in silence. I do not want to judge the action of the first father, even though I felt that the way he vent his anger on the child was not appropriate. He might be undergoing his own problem but channel it to this poor child. Yet, I can't help thinking--how would these 2 children turned out to be in the near future? How can we tell? Who has the better approach in dealing with their children? Parenting is definitely not an easy task. I pray that these 2 children will grow up to be good, loving and responsible young men for others.

Time flies, we are almost midway into Lent (soon will be 3rd Sunday). Many websites offer valuable resources for making the Stations of the Cross, lenten observances, reflections...etc. One of the sites I would recommend is Pray-as-you-go. This is a website hosts by the Jesuits and it offers audio readings and reflections daily. You can download it onto your computer, ipod, mp3 players so that while you are in the MRT (Metro in certain countries), bus, train, or even while driving, you can spend some 5 to 10 minutes for meditations and reflections. This is great for those of us who are always on the go and have little time to really sit down for quite time. In my faith journey, sometimes I feel God has different ways of giving me reminders, consolations and assurance. A while ago, as usual, I made a very special prayer intention. A couple of days later, I received a call and true enough, my prayers was answered. I jumped with joy and right after that, as I look out of the window, I saw this:

Immediately, I sensed the Lord assuring me of His love, presence and also a reminder of His promise. He is always there for those who believes, for those who trusts. I was overcome with joy and love. Yes, especially in moments of darkness, God knows when to give a glimpse of light and hope.

The New Year has just begun and seems I am behind time again. Everything seems to have a new beginning and even in some of our apostolic activities. So, what's up?

Just last weekend, we had our first Journey Within Session with young women who seek to discern for the vocation in life. 3 lovely young women attended and looking forward to a journey together for the next few months. We had the grace of having Sr. Wendy who just came back from States. So, she shared with us her vocational story which I believed must have touched the young women in different ways. We ended with an hour of adoration with the community and fellowship.

This week, I am into planning some vocational programs and plans for re-designing the website. I felt like helpless since I am not so technologically creative and artistic. Let's hope that something will turn up then.

Obviously I have been way behind in blogging. Many things and events happened during these past 3 weeks. Besides the busy schedule of running between Jurong Point and parishes for book displays, there are little errands around that take up time and energy. One of the major thing happened here in our diocese and particularly in our parish is the sudden loss of our assistant priest, Fr. David Thexiera, aged 51. Fr. David was ordained as a diocesan priest in 1999 but was from the Neo-Catechumenate since 1984. He was posted to our parish here in St. Francis of Assisi at the beginning of this year. Just 2 weeks ago, he was on his way to Australia and stopover at Bangkok, supposed to meet his friend there before proceeding his trip. At the immigration, he felt sick and collapsed. Since then, he never woke up. He was airlifted back to Singapore after a week and died on 13 December. It came as a sudden shock for everyone. Fr. David was buried today and his service as priest has touched many lives. A blog was specially set up for him during his last days on earth. http://www.frdavid-ablessedlife.blogspot.com/

Many of us still cannot accept the fact that he has returned to the father. His voice, his image is so vivid and alive in each of our mind and heart. This just reminded me that life is short, unpredictable, just like the Lord said, we do not know the hour, the day of His coming.

Jurong Point

Here in Singapore, we just began our annual outreach at Jurong Point--a mall west of Singapore. We have a little kiosk where we offer books and religious articles to the people. This is a good way in reaching out to all people during the Christmas Season. Here is a picture of our kiosk:

The joy of being here is being able to be present to the people, many of whom are non-Catholics and also to provide religious materials to the Catholics and Christians who do not have much access to them. Yesterday, I was at the kiosk and one little girl looked at me with surprised and exclaimed: Wow! This is their uniform!

Years ago, I met a non-catholic here too and I was able to accompany her to a Christmas Mass and from then, she attended RCIA and became a catholic.

Well, I hope to share more joys later.

These few weekends have been busy, going to the parishes for book display and at the same time promoting 366 Days with the Lord. It is such a joy when people came forward to get this Liturgical Diary, expressing their desire to be more in touch with the word of God daily. Many have been getting this for the past few years. We just hope that many more people will feel this thirst.

Last Sunday, I also had the opportunity, for the first time in my life, to give a little presentation to a small group of young working adults in Christ the King Church. They were producing a magazine for the parish, which looks very impressive, well lay-out, with nice, wide contents about the life in the parish. I touch on the Spirituality of being a Christian Communicator, emphasising each baptized Catholic's role and duty to share in the mission of Jesus, being sent out to proclaim the Good News to all people, and the need of a deepening personal relationship with Jesus, who is our model and the Perfect Communicator. I do not know how much I brought across the message but trust that the Holy Spirit is the one to touch they hearts and give them the encouragement to persevere in this great mission which they had begun.

Today, I was in a convent school for book display and was amazed to see that many students have at least 2 or more badges on them besides their own names--prefect, prefect buddy, librarian, PE monitor, sports leader, most helpful student..... What surprised me was 2 students were having a button with Toilet Ambassador. What do they do? I still couldn't find out because the student concerned just smile at us when we showed interest. For whatever reason or motivation, we just hope that this is a form of encouragement for each student.

"The servant who knew his master’s will

but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will

shall be beaten severely;

and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will

but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating

shall be beaten only lightly.

Much will be required of the person entrusted with much,

and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more."

This part of today's gospel reading struck me and keep me pondering. In fact, I was rather preoccupied and even a bit fearful with these words of Jesus. The priest at Mass mentioned: we all know the will of God, but are we acting according to His will?

How much preparation did I make? How often do I act in accord with His will, but instead with my own will? Am I ignorant to His will especially in my daily living as a religious?

On the consoling side, just when I was reflecting these in chapel, I came upon these words:

There is nothing to be afraid, let us not leave space to angiush or distrust. Resort to Mary, the "faithful servant" of the Lord: the Queen of Heaven is ready to support us in this earthly pilgrimage.

Liturgical Biblical Diary

Every year around this time, our community will begin the annual promotion of the Liturgical Biblical Diary, known as 366 Days with the Lord (hey, it's the leap year in 2008). As the name suggests, it is not an ordinary diary and at the same time, it is not a Bible by itself. Following the Church's liturgy, it contains the daily gospel reading, accompanied by reflection done by Fr. Harold Buetow, a diocesan priest in Brooklyn. He has a number of books on homelies and pastoral talks. As this is a good way to encourage people to get in touch with the Word of God daily, we the Daughters of St. Paul in Singapore has make this an annual project and it is a great joy to see that each year, there is an increasing number of people asking for this diary as this shows the hunger for the Word of God.

The second school we visited was a girl school. We can see a bit of different. The girls really read. More books were diffused and we can see their enthusiasms.

The 3rd school we went, on the other hand, was all boys and just like the previous one, the reading power is good too. We can see that the parents do give their encouragement for the children to get good books.

These past 3 weeks, I have been going to 3 elementary schools with our novice, Lynette, for outreach. It has been an interesting experience after quite a long period of "out of touch" with school children.

The first school was a mixed mission school in a neighbourhood, what we call "heartland". A number of students did buy books but most were interested in little bookmarks. In this school, we discovered the young "entrepreneurship" in them. We noticed a group of boys carrying bags of water with some little blue "jelly balls" in it. We found out that one of them was selling seeds which they called "water-baby". They were supposed to grow in water and multiply at a certain size. What interest me most was, the boy who did the selling bought it at a low price from some stores and he was selling to his schoolmates at 1 for 5 cents, they will get one free if they buy 20 cents. We can see that he did "earned" quite a lot of money out of it.

Community of Singapore

I would like to share a bit about my community here in Singapore, even though some may have known the reality here.

We were founded in 1994, and before this year, we already have 3 perpetual professed sisters and one postulant. Till today, we have 5 perpetual professed Singaporean sisters, 1 junior professed and 1 novice. God has blessed our community with vocations even though we are small.

These 2 weeks, there has been quite a bit of movements here. Together with my return, we have our new junior professed sister, Karen, who made her first profession in Boston on 30 June. We also have Lynette, our second year novice, who is here with us for her 4 months' apostolic experience. Then, we have Sr. Lioba, a Korean perpetual professed sister, staying with us and studying English. So, in the whole community, we are altogether 8, and frankly speaking the whole house is full--we have no more spare room for visitors.....

However, Sr. Wendy will be leaving us sooooooon, very soon, that is, next Tuesday. She will be staying in LA for a couple of months to take up some apostolic updating.

Happy Feast of St. Paul!

Yes, today, the Pauline Family celebrates the feast of our patron, St. Paul. Many of our sisters celebrate their anniversary of profession this day, and here in Rome, at least more than 50 celebrate their 50th year of consacrated life--just in Italy, Daughters of St. Paul. If you happened to be reading my other blog on Blessed James Alberione, we also celebrate his 100th year of priestly ordination.

25 of our sisters are also making their perpetual profession today all over the world and novices are making their first commitment through their first temporary profession. One of them is Karen Eng, who is from Singapore and will be making her profession today in Boston with her 2 companions. Please join us to thank the Lord for having chosen and called us to this special mission.

Processions

I am probably a bit late, but would like to share a bit about processions here. On 31 May, I got the opportunity of joining the annual rosary procession in Vatican garden, which was opened to all. It was just impressive to see the number of people attending and praying in different languages. I tried to get some pictures, but it is difficult to balance between holding the booklet, rosary, lighted candle and then with a camera. So, obviously the photos didn't turn out well. The Pope came at the end when we reached the grotto of our Lady of Lourdes. There were readings and he gave the homily and blessings at the end.Then on Thursday, 7 June, we had the Corpus Christi procession. It started with the Mass outside St. John Lateran, with the Pope as the main celebrant. The square was not really filled up in the beginning but by the time Mass finished and as the procession began, it was just amazing where these people came from.

Again, this time, I didn't get good pictures because of the distance (my camera can reach only up to 4x zoom and my hands were not steady, probably because age is catching up). So from there we walked all the way to St. Mary Major, which is about 1.5 km. There were prayers and singing during the procession and it ended with the Pope's benediction.

The Breath of God Within Us

When we speak about the Holy Spirit, we speak about the breath of God, breathing in us. The Greek word for "spirit" is pneuma, which means "breath." We are seldom aware of our breathing. It is so essential for life that we only think about it when something is wrong with it.

The Spirit of God is like our breath. God's spirit is more intimate to us than we are to ourselves. We might not often be aware of it, but without it we cannot live a "spiritual life." It is the Holy Spirit of God who prays in us, who offers us the gifts of love, forgiveness, kindness, goodness, gentleness, peace, and joy. It is the Holy Spirit who offers us the life that death cannot destroy. Let us always pray: "Come, Holy Spirit, come."

Children and the Media: A Challenge for Education

The theme of the 41st World Communications Day, invites us to reflect on two related topics of immense importance: the formation of children and the formation of the media.

The complex challenges facing education today are often linked to the pervasive influence of the media in our world. The relationship of children, media, and education can be considered from two perspectives: the formation of children by the media; and the formation of children to respond appropriately to the media. A kind of reciprocity emerges which points to the responsibilities of the media as an industry and to the need for active and critical participation of readers, viewers and listeners.

Parents have a right and duty to ensure the prudent use of the media by training the conscience of their children to express sound and objective judgments which will then guide them in choosing or rejecting programmes available.

Media education should be positive. Children exposed to what is aesthetically and morally excellent are helped to develop appreciation, prudence and the skills of discernment. It requires formation in the exercise of freedom. In the light of truth, authentic freedom is experienced as a definitive response to God’s ‘yes’ to humanity, calling us to choose, not indiscriminately but deliberately, all that is good, true and beautiful.

How could one explain this ‘entertainment’ to the countless innocent young people who actually suffer violence, exploitation and abuse? The Church herself, in the light of the message of salvation entrusted to her, is also a teacher of humanity and welcomes the opportunity to offer assistance to parents, educators, communicators, and young people. Above all, the Church desires to share a vision of human dignity that is central to all worthy human communication. "Seeing with the eyes of Christ, I can give to others much more than their outward necessities; I can give them the look of love which they crave" (Deus Caritas Est, 18).

Ogni tristezza viene dalla lontananza del Signore. Per questo, i discepoli saranno tristi per un po', perché per qualche tempo non vedranno il volto del Signore, non lo sentiranno più vicino come loro compagno di viaggio. è il momento del buio, della notte che apre al Venerdì Santo, ma è la "notte necesaria". Senza la passione di Gesù, non avremmo compreso l'amore del Padre.

La soffrenza sembra il passaggio necessario per giungere alla gioia, così come un bimbo non può venire al mondo senza il travaglio del parto. Ogni crescita umana ha la sua fase di crisi, sembra che senza la crisi non si cresca. Così anche ogni nostra maturazione nella fede ha bisogno di passare per una sofferenza, per la croce di Gesù, ha bisogno di purificarsi nel suo sangue e nella sua-nostra morte perché si apra il mattino della gioia. Solo così lo Spirito Santo può distruggere l'uomo vecchio, prigioniero della tristezza, e dare alla luce l'uomo nuovo, libero e gioioso, in attesa del giorno senza tramonto in cui la nostra gioia sarà piena.

To be prophets in today's world, women religious must cultivate an intimate friendship with God.

The Pope said that on May 7, in an audience with a group of 794 superiors-general of women's religious congregations, gathered in a plenary assembly for the week.

"The 'prophet' first listens and contemplates, then speaks, letting himself be totally infused with that love for God that fears nothing and is stronger than death."

"An authentic prophet, therefore, is not overly worried about doing works, which is undoubtedly important, but not essential. The prophet tries, above all, to be a witness of God's love, trying to live it in today's world, even if his presence is considered 'uncomfortable' to some, because it offers and incarnates alternative values. Only union with God can cause and strengthen the 'prophetic' role of your mission, which consists in the 'proclamation of the heavenly kingdom,' an indispensable proclamation in every age and society.

Benedict XVI encouraged the superiors to make their primary concern that of helping "your fellow sisters to search for Christ and place themselves in generous service to the Gospel."

"Do not give in to the temptation of distancing yourselves from intimacy with your heavenly Spouse by letting yourselves be captured by the concerns and problems of everyday life. In most part of the world today, we celebrate Labour Day, Feast of St. Joseph... Silently, the Daughters of St. Paul in Singapore, together with many other communities over the world, celebrates her 13th year of foundation. Yes, 1994 our sisters began their mission in Singapore--Sr. Lorenzina, Sr. Agostina and Sr. Grace (first Singaporean DSP--1960). At the present moment, God has graced us with 5 local perpetual sisters and 2 novices, one of whom will be making her first profession this coming June. Together with my sisters, I thank God for calling us to share in this special mission, for all the marvellous works He has done and continue to do, in Singapore. Let us continue to pray for our sisters in the community, and that He will give us more good vocations to share in this great mission, to proclaim His marvellous love for all humanity through all the means of social communications.

Last week, the Union for the Major Superior of Religious Institute (Unione Superiore Maggiore d'Italia) organized a trip to Subiaco for the religious in Rome. I had the grace to participate in this outing, which is both enriching and relaxing/refreshing. Altogether we were in 5 bus loads, which is about 150 of us. Imagine having all these nuns on the road....

Subiaco is a city in the south of Rome, mainly renowned as tourist and religious resort for its sacred grotto (Sacro Speco), in the St. Benedict's Abbey, and the Abbey of St. Scholastica. It is also famous as the first city in Italy where books were printed, in the 15th century. "Sacro Speco" - the cave where Saint Benedict (480 - 547 (67)) lived for three years, eating food lowered in a basket to him by the hermit monk Romanus.

On our way back, we also stop by at St. Vittorina. There is a community of sisters, whose ministry includes praying for vocations, and also made known our Lady of Fatima. I can't rememeber the name of the congregation though, what a shame!

2 lovely and cheerful visitors

Last week, I had the great joy of knowing 2 lovely young women who visited our media center. I was arranging the shelves when I heard a sweet voice asking: who is St. Rita, what makes her a saint? This started our conversation. Chihiro from Japan, and to my surprised, Francesca from........Singapore. Both are studying in York and were in Rome for a real short visit. I am inspired by the desire of Chihiro--the desire to be a catholic. She has been going to Church, for Mass and I believe involves in Church activities. She is just waiting for her parents to give the "go-ahead" signal to be baptized. I can sense her conviction and her faith in our Lord. Francesca, active catholic in Church of Holy Family, very joyful and sensible. She does not want to make a decision for religious life now because she wants to be free from the "pressure" of the expectations of others, meaning, those around her encourage her to be religious, and would not be surprised if she does. So, she wants to be sure that it is not because of their expectations, but her free choice.

Talking to young women always give me great inspirations and encourage me even more to share with them of the faith and religious life. We believe definitely that meeting each other here in Rome is not a mere coincidence. So, do keep both of them in your prayers.

The Pope's new book Gesù di Nazaret was released in Italian, German and Polish on his 80th birthday, 16 April 2007. At our Paoline Multimedia International Book Center, people were already waiting anxiously outside the center before 9 am, the opening hour. However, the book did not arrive on time, so many people seemed to be rather disappointed. Many made their reservations instead and collect it later. The reporter and crews from CNN were also waiting patiently outside, hoping to capture the first moment of the arrival. Much to our disappointment, the truck did not arrive until almost 11 am. before that, our employee and one of our sisters managed to get 2 boxes on a trolley from the Vatican book center. This shows their collaboration with us too.

Once the book arrived, people just couldn't wait to be the first to grab the book. Many bought more than 1 copy. This shows not only their support and love for the Pope but their thirst in reading and knowing more about God.

Tomorrow is the 80th birthday of the Holy Father, Benedict XVI. Today, St. Peter's Square was filled with well-wishers attending the Eucharistic celebration with him. I was able to get to the Square while it was not so packed and managed to get to the center. Though it was not very near, I still could see him at the altar pretty clearly. I met a Lutheran couple from Denmark , who managed to get into the Square by chance. They were here 3 days but have not been able to go into the Basillica because it was always packed. Today, they decided to go to the Vatican Musuem, arriving only to realize that it is closed on Sunday. When they turn to the Square, a group of Germans offered them the tickets for the Mass. They were very happy about it. I was glad to share with them a bit of our Catholic Teachings and to hear from their experience. In front of me also there was a couple from North Italy and at the back--from Argentina. It is always amazing to see the crowd from all over the world, even of different faith gathering at St. Peter's.

The glory of His birth was hidden in the least of the cities of Israel. The meaning of His death was hidden from human eyes in the greatest city of this world.
